“Decisions we take today will have an effect years from now. This is why we must think a generation ahead.”
Robert Noel, Chief Executive, Land Securities

Land Securities’ Sustainability Report provides a top-line summary of the group’s progress this year. Following a review of its sustainability activities Land Securities has moved from 23 tactical targets to nine 2020 sustainability commitments. This, alongside the appointment of a senior sustainability executive, gives it clear focus for the coming years as it continues to shape its longer-term strategy.

2015 highlights include:

  • 100% construction, office portfolio and shopping centre waste diverted from landfill
  • 100% of its operations ISO14001 certified
  • 0 environmental incidents
  • 8% overall energy reduction
  • 96/A- its highest Carbon Disclosure Project score
  • 157 jobs secured for disadvantaged groups in London
  • 51%/49% female/male gender balance
  • £3m value of financial, time and in-kind contributions

Interesting progress this year also includes two new energy-related initiatives; a ground-breaking, pilot energy performance programme which aims to make savings through building systems efficiencies, lifecycle upgrades and customer engagement, all within the constraints of a landlord/customer model. And the trial of a new web-based system that uses data analytics to identify savings and improvements.
Also of note are the commitment to make measurable improvements to the diversity profile of Land Securities’ own employee mix and lead the industry in removing barriers, and a commitment to secure 1,200 jobs for disadvantaged people, by 2020.
The report is independently assured to ISAE3000.
Land Securities is the UK’s largest listed commercial property company and a member of the FTSE 100. The company owns and manages more than 26.5m sq ft of property, from shopping centres to offices, valued at £14bn.
