BSCI´s Annual Report shows that factories and farms in BSCI
Participants’ supply chains have experienced another year of improved
working conditions
Today, the Business Social Compliance Initiative (BSCI) publishes its 2011 Annual Report, ‘Towards improved working conditions of factories and farms worldwide’. The report shows that improvements to working conditions in supplier countrieshave been achieved thanks to the ongoing commitment of the many companies engaged in BSCI. The report is available from http://bsci-intl.org/system/files/bsci-annual-report-2011_1.pdf
Through BSCI’s comprehensive and tailored workshops, in 2011, BSCI reached out to over 4,500 factory and farm managers through 85 workshops across the world. Furthermore, BSCI worked closer than ever to engage its participating companies in the BSCI process through Information Seminars which trained over 300 new participants.
Working with key stakeholders including governments, trade unions, NGOs and business associations is critical for resolving complex issues behind poor working conditions. In 2011, BSCI organised Round Tables in major sourcing countries focussing on issues that are high on the political agenda, such as worker-management relations in Bangladesh and the implications of the new social security law in China.
BSCI 2011 data has shown that factories and farms in sourcing countries, particularly in China, Bangladesh, India, Turkey and Vietnam, have shown improvements to working conditions. These significant results were achieved through the implementation of ‘corrective actions’ along with effective training for factory and farm managers.
“BSCI continues to be the leading global initiative that provides a comprehensive system for companies to improve working conditions in their supply chain. BSCI results show that, while considerable challenges remain on all levels, the long-term commitment of companies using the BSCI system leads to improvements in working conditions” said Dr. Sibyl Anwander, Coop Switzerland, Chair of the BSCI Steering Committee.
