ACCSR’s 4th Annual Conference “Meeting the Standard: the Post-GFC World of Responsible Business Practice”

19 February 2010

Melbourne, Australia

Are you ready to meet the standard of responsible business practice in a post-GFC world? Find out what a new global ISO standard on social responsibility principles, topics and practices will mean for your organisation, and learn:

What issues and practices the new ISO standard will cover

What value it can add to your organisation

How it will relate to existing ISO standards and other CSR instruments i.e. the GRI and the UN Global Compact

What the implications for stakeholders and the environment will be.

Attended by over 200 leaders in business, government, civil society and academia, ACCSR’s Annual Conference has rapidly become recognised as a leading event in the Australian social responsibility events calendar, providing thought leadership by addressing the key issues and trends in corporate social responsibility. This conference will feature three international speakers and five experts who have been central to the development of the new global standard on corporate responsibility -ISO 26000 – due to be released in 2010. Responsible business practices can help address the stakeholder and ethical issues that have eroded trust in business during the Global Financial Crisis. CSR survived the Global Financial Crisis, proving that ‘business as usual’ is no longer viable and the ISO 26000 has the potential to reshape the CSR landscape.

Verité India Supply Chain Symposium

18 November 2009

Delhi, India

On November 18, 2009, ASK and Verité will hold our inaugural India Symposium, examining social and environmental responsibility as a key part of sustainability in supply chains.

We will explore the key role that social compliance and labor rights play in a broader sustainability agenda, sharing perspectives from international and domestic practitioners of social compliance, labor protections, development, capacity building, sourcing and branding.

For over a decade global brands have been pursuing supply chain social and environmental responsibility.  Yet labor problems persist, some of them severe.

  • What have we learned?

  • What does supplier ownership really mean?

  • How can brands and Indian suppliers create mutually beneficial partnerships in support of better labor practices?

This one-day Symposium will share concrete approaches to these questions.

Project Risk Symposium 2009 – ‘The new rules of the game’

17 June 2009

London, UK

The volatility in the current environment has changed the perception and nature of project risks. This requires new and innovative instruments to manage them.

Project Risk Symposium 2009 is the first-ever event that concentrates uniquely on Project Risks. It covers the different areas of risk and introduces the key instruments to help manage them. It brings together financiers, diverse sponsors, industry experts and professional associations. The audience will learn more about:

Financial risks: How has the perception of the financial risks changed? How have they impacted the cost of projects?
Market and political risks: What do they mean in the current market context?
Legal risks: Do more stringent contractual terms prevent project default?
Technical and operational risks: How can they be prevented from the beginning rather than corrected at the expense of costs overruns and delays?
Environmental and social risks: Why are they more important now than ever? Who benefits from Equator Principles? What are the implications?
Sustainability in Project Finance: What does it mean? How should regulations evolve?

Corporate Responsibility 2009: Building a New Corporate Agenda

30-31 March 2009

Chatham House, London, UK

Conference Overview
Whether the issue is climate change, economic growth, or accountability, multinational companies today are under unprecedented pressure to play their part in solving the major global challenges. Businesses are increasingly expected not only to create jobs, profits and new technologies, but also have positions on complex public policies. At the same time, critics see big business as the cause of many of the world's problems, and are concerned by what they see as the expanding influence of business on government policies.

This annual Chatham House conference, produced in partnership with FTSE, will bring together leading experts from business, civil society and government to discuss the challenges that will shape the 21st century. In particular, it will explore the outlines of a new agenda for business and its stakeholders to respond to increasing natural resource constraints, the need to promote human rights standards, and bring new technologies to market more quickly.

Speakers include:

Andrew Mitchell MP
Shadow Secretary of State for International Development

Richard Howitt
Labour MEP for the East of England and European Spokesperson on CSR

Dr Monty Jones
World Food Prize Laureate and Executive Director
Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa

ICCSR 6th annual symposium

07 November 2008

Nottingham, UK

The International Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility is pleased to announce its sixth annual symposium. The theme this year: Spheres of Influence/Spheres of Responsibility: Multinational Corporations and Human Rights.

In his third report as Special Representative of the Secretary-General on the issue of Human Rights and Transnational Corporations and Other Business Enterprises, Professor John Ruggie has argued:

States have a duty to protect human rights
Corporations’ have a responsibility to respect human rights; and
States have a duty to ensure that when and if corporations fail to respect human rights, these failures be investigated, punished and redressed.

These arguments are of vital interest to business ethics and business and society scholars and practitioners. Ruggie’s suggestions arguably represent a reassertion of a more traditional division of labour between business and government: A reassertion of the belief that businesses should predominantly be concerned with the production of goods and services (and obeying laws and more generally recognized moral precepts); whilst governments should be concerned with the establishment and enforcement of these “rules of the game”.

Ruggie’s third report demands serious engagement from those who argue for more (and less) expansive notions of corporate social responsibility.

Confirmed Keynotes & Contributors
Professor Robert McCorquodale – Director of the British Institute of International and Compartive Law.  Roberts research and teaching interests are in the areas of public international law and human rights.
Chris Avery – Director, Business & Human Rights Resource Centre formerly Legal Adviser and Deputy Head of Research Department, Amnesty International
Professor Denis Arnold – Surtman Distinguished Scholar in Business Ethics, University of North Carolina at Charlotte
Additional Keynotes and contributors to be confirmed.

Making it happen: implementing the UN Principles for Responsible Investment

31 October 2008

London, UK

Just over two years after the UN Principles for Responsible Investment (UN PRI) were launched by the UN Secretary-General in New York, the initiative has garnered the support of over 360 institutions representing more than US$ 15 trillion in assets.

The UN PRI, an investor initiative in partnership with UNEP FI and the UN Global Compact, was designed to align the goals of the institutional investor and sustainable development objectives of the United Nations, and has clearly succeeded in drawing support among the investment community. But as signatories to a voluntary and aspirational scheme, what can asset owners and asset managers do in concrete terms to promote the main goal of the PRI: to embed the idea of sustainability into investment management and encourage better corporate environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices?
To address these key issues, EIRIS is hosting an event that will include leading speakers in this field:

Donald MacDonald, Chair of the UN PRI
Georg Kell, Executive Director of the UN Global Compact
James Gifford, Executive Director of the UN PRI
Colin Melvin, Chief Executive Officer of Hermes Equity Ownership Services Ltd

EIRIS fully supports the PRI initiative and sees it as one of the most important developments in the field of responsible investment in the last 25 years. During this seminar we will be presenting the key findings from our 2008 report on the State of CSR, looking in particular at how well companies are reporting on key ESG questions, an issue highlighted in Principle 3 of the PRI. EIRIS will be introducing its PRI toolkit designed to help signatories integrate ESG data into their analysis process, identify priorities and goals for engagement, and monitor companies’ reporting practices.

Taplow House, Buckinghamshire, UK

STEP FORWARD TO BE A ONE PLANET LEADER

‘We only have one planet to support us’. Obvious perhaps, but WWF’s Living Planet Report shows we are currently consuming about 25% more than the planet can sustain and therefore need 1.25 planets to meet our current global demands – we are clearly living beyond our means.

Many companies recognize the need to operate more sustainably but it’s a struggle to turn vision into reality. The time has come for managers from a variety of functions to develop new skills and new business models. We urgently need to grow a network of skilled ‘One Planet Leaders’.

This high-level programme is aimed at business leaders who want to make dramatic progress in building sustainability into their business models. To fit your schedule the programme is delivered through intensive workshops plus flexible learning across a three-month period and also offers the opportunity to achieve a Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainable Development with the University of Exeter.

One Planet Leaders does not replace existing company commitments to sustainability but rather broadens your options and equips you to implement those commitments effectively and strategically. Drawing on a range of experts and your peers, you will develop solutions to the strategic and operational challenges you face.

3rd Annual Best Practice Sustainability Reporting

26-27 May 2008

Rendezvous Hotel, Melbourne, Australia

Among the Global Fortune Top 250 companies, 52 per cent of them publish sustainability reports, and 64 per cent include sustainability information in their financial reports. The number of Australian companies undertaking sustainability reporting still lags behind this international average. All stakeholders need to continue working together to increase the uptake and quality of sustainability reporting in Australia.

Many organizations today already see a range of incentives for non-financial reporting. Reporting companies often cite increased market share, innovation and new business opportunities, risk identification and mitigation, employee motivation and retention, enhanced reputation and brand, and improved shareholder value as key drivers to report.

This 2-day conference can help you optimize sustainability strategies to achieve long-term development and financial gains. An international keynote case study covering “Initiating Green IT projects to achieve long-term development” with a broad range of award-winning real-life best practice case studies will be presented by the leading organizations across different sectors. The conference also provides participants with a precious networking opportunity to share the common problems and solutions with successful industry players.

Green Business

20 February 2008

London, UK

The London Business Forum, presents Green Business: How companies can profit from customer demands for greener products.

A morning with Karen Fraser, founder of the Ethical Reputation Index on Wednesday 20 February 2008 from 9:30 am - 12:00 pm at The Lewis Media Centre, London.

Who really cares about green issues - and are customers willing to put their
money where their mouth is? The focus on ethical and environmental change raises a number of questions that businesses must answer in order to stay competitive.

Is it enough to be 'seen to be green', or does it need a change in
approach to business?

How do companies meet the challenge of higher public expectations
while creating value for shareholders?

Where is the greatest risk for companies and what should companies
do to minimize risk?

Is there money in green - and if so, where is it?

What is the key to Marks and Spencer's success - and what lessons
can companies learn from their example?

Karen Fraser, founder of the Ethical Reputation Index and adviser to clients
including Co-operative Bank and Body Shop, will use her expertise to answer these questions and tell you what your organization can do to change the way your company is seen by shareholders and customers alike.

BEP US East Coast Senior Executives' Seminar

05-08 November 2007

New York, USA

The Programme, which is developed and run by the University of Cambridge Programme for Industry, is designed to help organisations integrate the concepts of sustainable development into their business thinking and practice. The seminars aim to help a select group of highly influential decision-makers understand the challenges and opportunities of sustainable development and to inspire them to make the necessary changes within their organisations and beyond. During the seminar, delegates will have the opportunity to update their understanding of emerging social and environmental trends, reassess current business models in the light of these trends, and hear from corporate practitioners and thought leaders about innovative approaches to designing and integrating a sustainability strategy within organisations.

Delegates are drawn from a broad range of functions, sectors and geographic regions, mostly from the business sector, although a number of places are also reserved for senior representatives from the public sector and non-governmental organisations. It is important to note that the Programme is intended for senior executives operating at a strategic level, rather than for specialists in the field of environment and corporate social responsibility. The alumni network of nearly 1500 has considerable potential to influence the debate at corporate, public and political levels, for example, through the Programme's Corporate Leaders Group on Climate Change, http://www.cpi.cam.ac.uk/bep/clgcc/.

8th International Sustainability Leadership Symposium

27-28 September 2007

Zürich, Switzerland

Demographic Change and Financial Services: a short List of Threats – a long List of Opportunities?

Business Leaders, Policy Makers and Researchers in Dialogue

Experts expect average life expectancy to continue rising in the years to come, with significant consequences such as an increase in the number of elderly people, a declining birth rate and accelerated migration on the international labour market. This demographic change will be a key force shaping the future in most industrial nations and will give rise to substantial and complex changes in society, business and politics. For instance, demand for child-related services is likely to fall, while demand for services geared towards senior citizens, such as healthcare and lifelong learning will continue to rise.

However, the specific effects of demographic change on financial markets, the business opportunities for financial service providers and funded pension schemes are more difficult to predict.

This year’s International Sustainability Leadership Symposium aims to collect debate and consolidate the essence of current knowledge in a comprehensive, cross-regional and interdisciplinary manner.

Key Questions
How will demographic change affect financial markets and financial services – especially the management of banks, insurance companies, pension funds and asset managers?
What are sustainable business opportunities for institutional investors and financial services companies in an aging society?
How will the need for regulation and supervision be affected?

Participants
Business leaders, financial service providers, pension fund managers, academics, advisors and political regulators.

The event is scheduled to take place on September 20 and 21, 2007, in Barcelona, and will take as its central theme "the emerging global governance paradigm: the role of business and its implications for companies, stakeholders and society".

BEP European Senior Executives' Seminar

17-20 September 2007

Salzburg, Austria

One Planet Leaders

05-07 September 2007

Geneva, Switzerland

WWF International and Exeter University Centre for Leadership Studies bring you an exciting new sustainability programme for business managers. The programme is a three-month programme Explore and apply cutting edge thinking and build your competence to drive company value through sustainable business models. Step forward with us to create the companies of the future.

We are currently consuming 20 per cent more than the planet can sustain. The serious social and environmental challenges we face stem from viewing our planet as an infinite source of clean air, clean water and free ‘natural capital’ on which to build our global economy.

Companies do recognise the need to mainstream environmental and social issues but are still struggling to make this a reality. More business managers, from a variety of functions, need to develop the skills and knowledge to implement sustainable business models.

WWF International, in collaboration with Exeter University Centre for Leadership Studies, has launched ‘One Planet Leaders’ – a sustainability programme for business managers to explore, challenge and apply the latest thinking on sustainability and develop practical responses for their own business.

Over a period of three months, at workshops and through remote working, participants draw on information, opinions and perspectives from a range of experts and their peers to find solutions to the strategic and operational challenges they face. The programme comprises three one-and-a half-day workshops and remote activity in between, to run over 05-07 September, 8-10 October and 14-16 November 2007.

We invite you to join us in this exciting exploration to identify innovative solutions and help create the companies of the future. We invite you to step forward with us and be a ‘One Planet Leader’

Register by 31 July 2007 for the autumn programme.

Dealing with Disasters Conference 2007

05-06 September 2007

Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, UK

Disasters destroy lives and livelihoods but they can also create some positive outcomes: solidarity, virtue, commitment, invention of new ideas, improved communication, resilience, bravery, self-sacrifice, creativity, opportunities for sustainable development, abandonment of human conflicts, or simply new friendships.

When it comes to disasters and disaster management, or deriving appropriate development strategies, nobody operates in isolation; families pull together, extended families are born, communities unite, Governments communicate, and partnerships between complementary or like-minded institutions are forged.

Building on the success of the 2006 “Dealing with Disasters” Conference, the key theme of the conference programme is to bring together practitioners, policy makers and academics from around the world to harness their collective expertise; integrating theory and practice to develop timely, cost-effective and solutions to dealing with disasters and to identify areas where further research and development is needed.

On behalf of the organisation committee, we would like to welcome you and look forward to a very engaging and constructive two days. Through active participation, the conference will make a significant contribution to the enhancement of our understanding of the causes of disasters, the effectiveness of our planning for risk reduction and our ability to respond quickly and effectively to such events whenever and wherever they may occur.

A Model for Change: Upward Harmonisation of OECD Guidelines Procedures

15 June 2007

Brussels, Belgium

OECD Watch, a network of 67 international NGOs working on Corporate Social Responsibility, is organising a multi-stakeholder roundtable aiming to discuss best practices in the implementation of the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises and to promote the exchange of experiences between stakeholders in EU Member States on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

The Roundtable is part of a European Commission-funded project that has as its primary goals to raise and standardize the tools and practices surrounding the OECD Guidelines, principally the National Contact Points (NCPs), and to promote convergence of CSR practices in the European Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) community.

This is a critical moment for the development and future of CSR and for the OECD Guidelines, which are currently one of the most comprehensive and widely-accepted tools for encouraging responsible business conduct.

The Roundtable, which will be an all-day event, will bring together representatives from various stakeholders groups, including governments, businesses, trade unions and NGOs. Our morning speakers will include representatives from the European Commission, the OECD, European Parliament and European businesses.
