Excellence Recognised by BITC Posted: 05-07-2012

Business in the Community (BITC), a charity that promotes responsible business practice, has been rewarding companies that have had a positive impact on the environment and society.

The Awards for Excellence, now in their fifteenth year, identify and endorse companies who excel in a wide range of categories including work experience, collaborative community action, supply chain, climate change, rural communities and sustainable travel.

A number of companies demonstrating that they have achieved a specific standard in their category are shortlisted with an overall winner chosen from each category. Each of the shortlisted companies is awarded a Big Tick.

By entering the BITC Awards for Excellence, businesses are reviewing their impact on the environment and on society and, it is hoped, addressing any shortfalls that come to light. Entrants to the competition then gain recognition for their approach to responsible business.

This year's award winners include Marks & Spencer who were awarded the title of Responsible Business of the Year. The retailer's Plan A combines performance improvement with cultural change in a vision to become the world's most sustainable retailer by 2015.

Plan A activity has already shown financial benefits for M&S with a £70m benefit in the last year. An indication of the seriousness with which Plan A is viewed at M&S is that the CEO is measured on 'achievement of all Plan A commitments' and other board members and senior managers have a proportion of their remuneration linked to sustainability performance.
