Four issues dominate the agenda of all large corporations whose
procurement programme extends worldwide. They are concerned that
their suppliers operate in decent workplace conditions, that health
and safety policies are effective, that the environment is protected,
and that child labour is not employed to produce their products.
British American Tobacco buys most of its tobacco leaf directly
from small farmers and has a programme to enhance socially responsible
and environmental policies among its suppliers.
Outstanding features include:
Leaf
suppliers are audited over a three-year period
The
company has put in place social and environmental programmes to
help suppliers, although it has no legal obligation to do so
International
and local partnerships to eliminate child labour in tobacco harvesting
and production and help with any adverse effects on families.
